Attic ventilation lets outside air enter at the soffits and leave near the peak, which keeps the attic close to the outdoor temperature and carries moisture away. A cold, dry attic means snow melts less from below, the roof boards stay sound and the insulation stays dry.

Attic ventilation is not a stand-in for sealing. Sealing limits how much damp indoor air gets up there, while venting flushes out the little that still does. One without the other leaves a gap.

Attic Ventilation And Baffles details

Baffles Keep Attic Ventilation Working Under Deep Insulation

Attic ventilation trouble usually starts at the eaves. Loose fill drifting into those tight corners smothers the soffit vents, and the intake air stops. A baffle is a shallow chute stapled to the roof deck in each rafter bay, leaving an open channel from the soffit up into the attic.

We fit baffles before every top-up, so the new insulation can reach full depth right to the wall line without blocking attic ventilation.

Signs Of Poor Attic Ventilation

Weak attic ventilation shows up in several ways: frost on nails, dark spots on the roof boards, a musty smell and a very hot attic in summer. Short-lived shingles and ice ridges at the eaves can also point to weak attic ventilation, along with air leaks from below. The free photo check records each sign of weak attic ventilation.

Bathroom Fans That Defeat Attic Ventilation

A bathroom fan that blows into the attic pumps warm, wet air straight onto the roof boards, and no amount of attic ventilation keeps up with that. We find this more often than people expect. The fix is a sealed, insulated duct run to a proper roof or wall vent outside. We note it on the quote and explain who handles the vent outlet.

Attic Ventilation And Air Sealing Together

Attic ventilation works best when the ceiling below is sealed, because less moisture reaches the roof in the first place. Our attic air sealing page explains that part, and the blown-in fiberglass insulation page covers why deep, light insulation needs baffles at the eaves.

Attic Ventilation Price

Attic ventilation work is priced item by item, so you can see what each part of better attic ventilation costs. Baffles usually cost $10 to $25 each installed, and most attics need one per rafter bay along the eaves. Roof vents, soffit openings and fan duct fixes are priced separately on the attic ventilation quote.

Attic services

Work That Often Goes With This Job

Most Kanata attics get two or three of these done in the same visit, which saves a second trip.

Blown-In Fiberglass Insulation

Blown-in fiberglass insulation is loose glass fibre blown through a hose into the attic, where it builds a light, even layer over the ceiling. It does not absorb water and it does not settle much, which makes it a steady choice for an attic that will be left alone for decades.

Attic Insulation Replacement

Attic insulation replacement is a clear-out and a refill: the old layer is vacuumed away, the attic is cleaned, and new loose fill goes in to R-60. It is the answer when the existing material is soaked, mouldy, fouled by animals or crushed flat.

Attic Air Sealing

Attic air sealing plugs the holes in your top-floor ceiling where heated indoor air sneaks up under the roof. Loose fill slows heat soaking through drywall, yet air pours through an open hole as if the fill were not there.

Bonus Room Insulation

Bonus room insulation fixes the room that sits over an attached garage and never feels like the rest of the house. That room has a cold garage under its floor, short knee walls with attic space behind them and a sloped ceiling under the roof.
